At Brows by Katy in Wellington FL, we offer professional permanent makeup removal for clients who want a fresh start on their brows.
What Is Eyebrow Tattoo Removal?
Eyebrow tattoo removal — also called permanent makeup removal or PMU removal — is a procedure designed to lighten or fully remove unwanted cosmetic tattoo pigment from the brow area.
There are two main removal approaches used for permanent makeup:
Saline removal uses a high-concentration saline solution applied to the skin using a tattoo machine or manual tool. The saline draws the pigment up and out of the skin through a process called osmosis. It is gentle, effective for permanent makeup pigments, and can be performed on microblading, powder brows, and old brow tattoos.
Laser removal uses targeted light energy to break up tattoo pigment. Most effective for traditional tattoo ink but can also work on certain PMU pigments. May require more sessions than saline removal depending on the pigment type.
At Brows by Katy, saline removal is the primary technique used for permanent makeup removal — it is better suited to cosmetic pigments than laser and produces consistent results.
Who Needs Eyebrow Tattoo Removal?
The clients who most commonly seek brow removal are:
Microblading that faded to the wrong color. Over time, some microblading pigments oxidize and shift to gray, blue, orange, or red tones. This is especially common with older procedures or pigments that weren't matched correctly to the client's undertones. Removal lightens the discolored pigment so a correction or fresh treatment can be applied.
Incorrect shape or placement. A poorly designed brow shape — too arched, too flat, too far apart, or asymmetrical — can be lightened with removal to allow a correctly designed result to be applied.
Old brow tattoos from the 90s or 2000s. Many women have older cosmetic brow tattoos that are now the wrong shape, wrong color, or simply outdated. These tattoos tend to be deeper and require more sessions to remove — but lightening is achievable.
Change of preference. Sometimes a client's style, face, or aesthetic changes and the brows they chose years ago no longer suit who they are today. Removal allows a fresh start.
Pre-correction preparation. Before applying a corrective microblading or powder brow treatment, lightening existing pigment first produces a cleaner, more controlled final result.
How Many Sessions Does Removal Take?
The number of sessions required depends on:
- How old the original procedure was
- How deep the pigment was deposited
- The type of pigment used
- Your skin type and healing response
- How much lightening is desired — partial lightening vs full removal
Most clients require 3–6 saline removal sessions spaced 8 weeks apart for significant lightening. Full removal can take longer. At your consultation Katy will assess your existing brows and give you a realistic expectation for your specific situation.
Does Eyebrow Tattoo Removal Hurt?
Saline removal is comparable in discomfort to the original procedure — most clients rate it at a 3–5 out of 10. Numbing cream is applied beforehand to minimize discomfort.
The treated area will be red and may form a light scab during healing — similar to the healing process for the original procedure. Aftercare is essentially the same: keep the area dry, avoid sun exposure, and let healing happen naturally.
What Happens After Removal?
Once the brow area has been lightened to the desired degree and fully healed, you have several options:
Fresh microblading or powder brows. The most common next step. Once the old pigment is lightened, a correctly designed and matched treatment produces a clean, natural result.
Leave the brows natural. Some clients simply want the old tattoo gone and prefer to let their natural brows grow in. Removal supports this goal too.
Wait and assess. After each removal session, evaluate the lightening before deciding on the next step. There is no commitment to proceed with a new treatment after removal.
Why Choose a Certified Artist for Removal
Eyebrow tattoo removal should always be performed by a licensed, certified permanent makeup artist — not a general aesthetician or untrained technician. The skin around the eyes is delicate. Improper saline application or aggressive technique can cause scarring, hyperpigmentation, or incomplete removal.
At Brows by Katy, Katy Gordon holds 8 professional certifications including permanent makeup removal. Learn more about microblading safety and certification standards. Every removal appointment includes a full consultation to assess your existing brows, set realistic expectations, and design a removal plan before any treatment begins.
