Powder Brows (also called Ombré Brows) use a digital permanent makeup machine to deposit pigment in fine, layered dots. The result is a soft, gradient finish that looks like you've already filled in your brows with a brow pencil or shadow — light at the front, deeper at the tail.
Brows by Katy serves Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, Westlake, Lake Worth, and West Palm Beach — book your free consult to see if Powder Brows are the right technique for your skin and lifestyle.
What are Powder Brows?
Powder Brows are a modern permanent makeup technique that uses a digital tattoo machine to deposit thousands of tiny pigment dots into the skin. The dots are layered to create a soft, shaded, powdery finish that looks exactly like beautifully filled-in brow powder or pomade. The result is light and feathered at the front of the brow and gradually builds in depth toward the tail, giving you the signature soft-ombré look that flatters virtually every face shape.
The key difference between Powder Brows and microblading comes down to the tool and the technique. Microblading uses a hand-held blade to etch individual hair-like strokes — beautiful for dry, normal skin but prone to blurring on oily skin. Powder Brows use a machine and a gentle, layered shading technique that heals far more uniformly. The pigment sits at a consistent depth, so it doesn't migrate, doesn't blur, and doesn't lose definition the way microblading can on certain skin types.
Because the technique is so gentle on the skin and so versatile across skin types and ages, Powder Brows have become the most-requested service at Brows by Katy. They work on oily skin, mature skin, sensitive skin, and skin that previously had microblading or older permanent makeup that needs to be softened. The intensity is completely customizable — from a barely-there, soft-shaded enhancement to a defined, makeup-look finish — and the result lasts 2–3 years before a color refresh is needed.
Who Should Choose Powder Brows Over Microblading?
Powder Brows are the better choice for anyone with oily skin, large pores, mature or thinning skin, or a history of permanent makeup that didn't heal well. Oil naturally pushes pigment around in the skin, which causes microbladed strokes to blur into a single soft line over time — defeating the whole point of the hair-stroke look. Powder shading is unaffected by skin oil and heals to the same soft finish on every skin type.
If you prefer a more polished, made-up look (think a soft brow pomade rather than naked brows), if you wear makeup most days, if you're over 40 and your skin texture has changed, if you have rosacea or sensitive skin, or if you've had previous PMU you want to soften and correct, Powder Brows will give you a better long-term result than microblading.
If you have dry to normal skin, very little brow hair, and want the most natural, hair-like look possible, microblading may still be the right call. Many clients land somewhere in the middle and choose a Combo Brow (microbladed strokes at the front, powder shading through the body and tail). Katy will recommend the perfect technique during your free consultation.
