Microblading Aftercare: What to Expect the First 30 Days
So you've just had your microblading appointment — your new brows look bold, defined, and maybe a little darker than you expected. That's completely normal, and it's the first thing most clients ask about. Here's exactly what to expect over the next month, and how to take care of your new brows so they heal beautifully.

Days 1–3: Bold and a Little Tender
Right after your appointment, your brows will look noticeably darker and more defined than the final healed result — sometimes 30–50% darker. This is normal. Your skin is healing, and the pigment hasn't settled yet.
What to do:
- Gently blot (don't rub) the area with a clean tissue if needed
- Apply the aftercare ointment provided, in a very thin layer, as instructed
- Keep the area dry — no sweating, no steam, no direct water on your brows
What to avoid:
- Touching, picking, or scratching the area
- Makeup on or around the brows
- Sun exposure
Days 4–7: The Flaking Stage
This is the stage clients are least prepared for — and the one where most aftercare mistakes happen. Your brows will start to flake and peel, similar to a light sunburn peeling. The color underneath may look patchy or lighter during this time.
This is the single most important rule of microblading aftercare: do not pick at the flaking skin. Picking can pull pigment out unevenly, leading to patchy results that may need correction later. Let it flake off naturally — it usually resolves within a few days.
Days 8–14: The "Ghosting" Phase
After the flaking resolves, many clients notice their brows look lighter or more faded than expected — sometimes dramatically so. This is called "ghosting," and it's a normal part of the healing process as the skin regenerates over the pigment.
Don't panic, and don't book a touch-up yet. The color will gradually return as healing completes.
Days 14–30: Color Settles In
By the end of week 2 through week 4, the pigment settles into its true healed color — typically softer and more natural than the initial bold appearance, but more solid than the "ghosting" phase. This is roughly what your results will look like long-term, until your touch-up appointment.
Your Touch-Up Appointment: 6–8 Weeks Later
Every microblading service at Brows by Katy includes a touch-up appointment 6–8 weeks after your initial session. This is where any unevenness from the healing process gets corrected, color is reinforced where needed, and your final result is perfected.
General Aftercare Rules for the First 10–14 Days
- No sweating — skip intense workouts, hot yoga, saunas
- No swimming — pools, oceans, and hot tubs can affect healing and introduce bacteria
- No direct sun — UV exposure can fade pigment unevenly; once healed, daily SPF helps preserve your results long-term
- No retinol or exfoliating products on or near the brow area
- Sleep on your back if possible, to avoid rubbing the area on your pillow
