Does Microblading Hurt? What First-Time Clients in Wellington FL Should Know
If you've been eyeing microblading for months but haven't booked yet, there's a good chance one question is holding you back more than any other: does it actually hurt?
Limited appointments available each week.
It's the question we get asked most in consultations — more than cost, more than how long it lasts. Here's the honest answer.
It's Discomfort, Not Pain
Most clients describe microblading as mild discomfort — closer to a scratching or scraping sensation than the sharp, stinging pain people associate with tattoos. That's because microblading uses fine, hand-held blades to make superficial strokes in the skin, not a tattoo machine driving ink deep into the dermis.
A topical numbing agent is applied before the procedure starts and reapplied throughout, which keeps the sensation manageable for the vast majority of clients. Most people are surprised by how tolerable it is once they're actually in the chair.
Why Everyone's Experience Is a Little Different
Pain tolerance is personal, and a few factors genuinely do affect sensitivity:
- Where you are in your cycle. Many clients report being more sensitive in the days right before or during their period. If you have flexibility, scheduling outside that window can make for a more comfortable appointment.
- Skin sensitivity and skincare habits. If you've recently used retinoids or exfoliating acids near your brows, skin can be more reactive. Your artist will walk you through what to avoid in the days leading up to your appointment.
- Caffeine and alcohol. Both can heighten sensitivity and, in the case of alcohol, thin the blood — which is part of why it's on the pre-appointment avoid list.
- Anxiety itself. Tensing up in anticipation of pain often makes any sensation feel more intense than it is. Most clients relax significantly once the first few strokes are done and they realize it's far more manageable than they expected.
What It Actually Feels Like, Step by Step
Before strokes begin: Numbing cream is applied and given time to take effect — this is the only part where you might feel a slight tingling as it starts working.
During the strokes: A light scratching sensation, generally described as mild to moderate at most. Numbing is often reapplied partway through to keep things comfortable.
After the appointment: Some tenderness and mild swelling for the first day or so, similar to a light sunburn. This fades quickly. For a full day-by-day breakdown, see our microblading healing process guide.
Comparing It to Things You've Already Experienced
For context, most clients rate microblading as less uncomfortable than eyebrow waxing or threading, and noticeably milder than a traditional tattoo. If you've gotten through either of those without much trouble, microblading is very unlikely to be the thing that stops you.
Is It Right for You?
If discomfort has been the only thing keeping you from booking, it's worth having a real conversation about it rather than guessing. Every client's sensitivity is different, and a consultation is the place to talk through your specific concerns, your pain tolerance, and what to expect on the day.
